5 Inch 40 Pin RGB LCD Panel with 800x480 TN Display

800x480 TN TFT Module for Fixed-View Embedded HMI Integration

The 5 Inch 40 Pin RGB LCD Panel is an 800×480 TN TFT component for compact embedded HMI systems, instruments, control panels, and commercial terminals. It combines a 40-pin parallel RGB FPC, normally white transmissive operation, 500 cd/m² standard luminance, and a slim 120.7 × 75.9 × 3.05 mm outline. Optional resistive or capacitive touch can be evaluated for projects that require direct operator input.

A 40-pin connector does not guarantee compatibility with another 40-pin RGB LCD module.

Product Overview

This 5-inch display is intended for products that already provide native 800×480 parallel RGB timing or use a suitable controller board. Its 15:9 landscape format gives embedded designers enough space for status indicators, menus, numeric data, alarms, and control buttons without requiring a large enclosure.

The panel uses TN normally white technology with a preferred 6 o’clock viewing direction. That viewing behavior should be matched to the operator position and installation orientation rather than treated as an all-direction viewing solution.

Fixed-view HMI positioning

The module is most appropriate where the normal viewing position is predictable. Control panels, benchtop instruments, equipment dashboards, and compact terminals can orient the display around its strongest viewing direction.

Standard and project brightness

The standard configuration is specified at 500 cd/m². Higher-brightness versions up to 800 nits or above may be considered as project configurations, subject to optical, electrical, thermal, and sample confirmation.

The standard 500 cd/m² configuration is intended primarily for indoor or controlled-light environments.

Optional touch configuration

The base panel is supplied without touch. Resistive touch and capacitive touch are optional configurations whose outline, interface, cover structure, thickness, and FPC routing must be approved separately.

Why Choose This 800×480 TN TFT Module?

The combination of 800×480 resolution and a 5-inch diagonal provides a practical balance between UI detail and embedded-system resource requirements. It supports graphics-rich interfaces without moving to a high-bandwidth MIPI DSI, eDP, or LVDS architecture.

The 20 ms typical response specification is suitable for menus, indicators, animated status graphics, and ordinary HMI transitions. The 350:1 typical contrast and 50% NTSC color specification should be evaluated against the project’s visual expectations rather than compared directly with IPS or AMOLED alternatives.

Suitable selection conditions

Choose this module when the design requires:

  • Native 800×480 parallel RGB output
  • A compact 5-inch landscape interface
  • A predictable front viewing position
  • A thin 3.05 mm panel profile
  • Optional touch rather than mandatory integrated touch
  • Standard 500 cd/m² luminance for controlled-light operation

Conditions requiring another configuration

Additional hardware or qualification is required when the system uses HDMI, USB, MIPI DSI, eDP, or LVDS output; needs wide-angle IPS behavior; requires confirmed direct-sunlight readability; or needs a pre-integrated touch, cover lens, enclosure, or complete monitor assembly.

5 Inch 40 Pin RGB LCD Panel Interface Compatibility

The 40-pin FPC carries the display’s RGB signals and related control or power connections, but pin count alone does not establish interchangeability. The host design must be checked against the approved pin assignment, data-bit mapping, pixel clock, horizontal and vertical timing, voltage levels, FPC contact side, and cable orientation.

This panel cannot connect directly to HDMI, USB, MIPI DSI, eDP, or LVDS without suitable conversion hardware.

RGB host-board checks

Before PCB release, confirm:

  • Native 800×480 timing support
  • Required RGB data width and channel order
  • Pixel-clock and synchronization format
  • Logic and power voltage requirements
  • Reset, enable, and backlight-control connections
  • FPC pitch, contact side, insertion direction, and retention method

Controller-board conversion

A controller board may be used when the host does not output native parallel RGB. The selected board must generate the panel’s required timing and provide the correct pin mapping and backlight drive. A generic “40-pin LCD controller” description is not sufficient evidence of compatibility.

Driver IC boundary

ILI6122 and ILI5960 are listed display ICs for this module. Their presence does not define a universal host initialization sequence or guarantee compatibility with another panel using the same IC family. Datasheet-defined timing and power requirements remain controlling.

Mechanical and Enclosure Integration

The active image area measures 108.0 × 64.8 mm, while the module outline is 120.7 × 75.9 × 3.05 mm. The enclosure must accommodate the metal frame, FPC exit, connector insertion space, backlight structure, mounting tolerances, and any optional touch or cover-glass stack.

Viewing window and bezel design

The front opening should expose the active image without revealing unwanted border areas. Final bezel dimensions should be taken from the approved drawing rather than calculated only from the active area and overall outline.

FPC clearance

Provide sufficient bend radius and insertion clearance for the FPC. Avoid sharp folds, pressure points, and interference with fasteners or enclosure ribs. The connector location and contact orientation should be checked on a physical sample.

Touch-stack implications

Adding RTP or CTP changes the overall stack, front-surface position, optical behavior, and FPC routing. Cover glass, adhesive, bonding method, touch controller, and mechanical tolerances require separate evaluation.

Brightness, Viewing Direction, and Use Environment

The 6 o’clock designation identifies the preferred viewing direction for this TN panel. Product orientation should be tested with the actual UI because color shift and contrast inversion may become more visible outside the intended viewing cone.

The 5 Inch 40 Pin RGB LCD Panel can be considered for industrial controls, compact monitoring devices, POS interfaces, portable test and measurement instruments, and fixed-position smart terminals. Outdoor-facing use requires separate assessment of ambient light, cover-glass reflection, temperature, backlight power, thermal management, and enclosure protection.

The higher-brightness option does not by itself establish sunlight readability, waterproofing, optical bonding, or outdoor certification.

Recommended Applications

Appropriate project directions include:

  • Fixed-position industrial HMI panels
  • Automation and equipment controllers
  • Portable test and measurement instruments
  • Smart control terminals
  • Compact POS or service interfaces
  • Monitoring and status-display equipment
  • Auxiliary vehicle interfaces subject to vibration, temperature, and compliance qualification

Medical, vehicle, or outdoor projects require application-specific engineering and regulatory review.

Customization Options

Project evaluation may include FPC and interface design, backlight type and brightness, optional RTP or CTP, cover glass, mechanical adaptation, packaging, and controller-board matching. The displayed customization minimum is 500 pieces per configuration, but final commercial and technical scope must be reconfirmed for the selected design.

No optional feature should be treated as part of the standard module until it appears in the approved drawing, specification, and sample.

FAQ

about 5 Inch 40 Pin RGB LCD Panel

Is every 40-pin RGB panel interchangeable?

No. Pin count, pin assignment, voltage, RGB mapping, timing, FPC orientation, and backlight requirements must all match.

Is 500 cd/m² suitable for direct sunlight?

It should not be assumed to be direct-sunlight readable. The standard version is better suited to indoor or controlled-light conditions; brighter configurations require project validation.

What does the 6 o’clock viewing direction mean?

It indicates the preferred operator-viewing orientation for the TN panel. The final mounting direction should be checked with the actual UI and enclosure.

What is required before production approval?

Approval should cover the datasheet, mechanical drawing, pin assignment, timing, voltage, touch configuration, backlight requirements, enclosure fit, and physical samples.
